The Bertie Project by Alexander McCall Smith. The most recent novel in the 44 Scotland Street Series (that started as a serial in the Scotsman newspaper over a decade ago). Alexander McCall Smith is my favourite bed-time author by a long way. I find his writing so calming and I eagerly anticipate every new book.
Bird By Bird by Anne Lamott. This book has been recommended by so many writers I admire and I can see why. Her writing is engaging, truthful and inspiring.
Parenting From the Inside Out by Daniel Siegel and Mary Hartzell. This book provides compelling evidence that making sense of our own life and childhood experiences is the best gift you can give your child and yourself. It isn’t what happened in your childhood that is the crucial factor – it is how we make sense of those experiences.
A Tale For The Time Being by Ruth Ozeki. A unique and beautiful novel written in an intriguing format. I was baffled as i turned the final page and am still thinking about it weeks later.
The Whole Brain Child by Daniel Siegel. The structure of our children’s’ brains explained by a scientist in a way that makes it understandable. More importantly he provides some great concrete examples and tips of how to apply this knowledge when interacting with children.
