Outfit Planning. At the start of the season in addition to photographing my outfits i put together a spreadsheet on trips and events i had planned. I then sketched out potential outfits for each. It took a bit of time but also took away the stress of figuring out what i was going to wear as the event approached. It also identified a few key holes.
New items this season included:
- two new summer shift dresses (a navy&yellow Boden and a red print Agnes B)
- three pairs of French sole: navy patent (replace), navy weave (replace), neutral weave
- two new tops: pink & wite striped t-shirt and a black rouched top
- a new pair of stretchy, super-comfortable, mid waist H&M jeans
- I was on the look out for a new summer jacket or coat but didn’t find one
Favourite outfits. While all of my core outfits got good wear I definitely had a few outfits that felt the most special. For work they were my Tory Burch navy print dress and my navy Kate Spade dress and cardi combination. Both i have had for years. I also really liked my new red Agnes B dress. My favourite casual outfits were my striped three-quarter sleeve top and navy trousers (again!) and my green long dress – mainly because it’s Adrian’s favourite. I also liked wearing my navy/purple print dress that i had made a few years ago but didn’t wear much last summer.
Knowing when to retire or replace clothes. This is a tough one for me. I want to hang on to my favourite outfits forever. I also don’t like to be wasteful, ie replacing an item when it still has more wear in it. I’ve had to set myself a few clear rules – if something has a hole in it that can’t be fixed or if someone i trust tells me an item is starting to look shabby – it’s time to retire it. The only exceptions are if it fits into my ‘home wear’ and I allow myself one garment bag full of my favourite outfit that i could copy in the future.
Hiring a wardrobe consultant. I’m thinking of hiring a consultant in the autumn to help me refresh my look and add a few new key pieces and looks to my wardrobe. If i don’t end up finding a good fit this year it’s something i’m going to commit to doing for myself before i turn 40 🙂
